Canyon Junior Commits To Military Academy West Point

September 16, 2024 - Marlee Lightsey, a Canyon High School junior, spent her summer touring colleges that expressed interest in her volleyball skills with hopes of finding the perfect fit. Upon arrival at West Point, she quickly realized it is where she belongs. The campus ‘felt right,’ largely due to the military presence which runs deep within Lightsey’s family.

“My dad has been deployed and my mom is a military wife, so I learned to take the military seriously,” Lightsey explains. “My oldest brother has also enlisted and I have other family members in the military, so I know how big of a commitment it is to join, which drew me to look at West Point.”

West Point is a distinguished military school, with the acceptance rate a low 11 percent. The high standards for admittance makes a degree from West Point prestigious, and an invitation an honor. Students who attend the college graduate with a bachelor of science.

“It’s not volleyball, and then serving; it’s serving, then volleyball,” says Lightsey, confirming her understanding of the commitment and prestige involved with West Point.

Lightsey’s career plans include serving in the Army and working towards an opportunity to play for their volleyball team.

The volleyball player credits her work ethic, resulting in this amazing opportunity, to Coach Heather Sanders, head volleyball coach at CHS.

“She pushes me in the right direction," Lightsey reveals. "It’s a hard coaching style, but you can’t take it personally. You can always get one percent better.”

Lightsey looks forward to continuing to play for the Canyon volleyball team through her senior year; her goals include going to State and being named Player of the Year for the district. She also hopes to achieve 1,000 digs this season.

To prepare for her attendance at West Point, Lightsey plans on staying consistent.

“I probably touch a volleyball at least once a day," says Lightsey, who practices with the team daily.

Academically, she will remain enrolled in dual credit courses to prepare her for the college workload and academic standard.

Through her volleyball career and Comal ISD education, Lightsey is creating a legacy that promotes strong work ethic and dedication to her craft.

Thank you Marlee for being on the Path to Success!
